Every day for the past few weeks, I have walked by this advertisement.
Part of a set of ads with “humor” customized for DC, they miss the mark for me in that they resonate just enough to remind me how annoying DC can be (it’s an election year, so I’m extra cranky) but not so much that they are funny.
Another example of the hilarity: “It took an act of Congress to get you out of bed this morning.” HA! Get it? Mornings are hard…and this is DC, so like Congress makes laws here and shit. So yeah. That’s hysterical. It’s not as if I get out of bed every morning so I can continue to receive a paycheck.
A quick internet search yielded the news that others find these ads charming. Oops. Apparently they also ran ads in New York, and the NYC ads are a little more clever, like maybe they were written by people who actually live in New York. They inexplicably used the dumbest ad in both markets: “A text-walker ran into you while you were text-walking.” Is this thing on?
But back to the holiday ad, which really fries my ass.
You see, this Monday is a holiday. Indeed, my calendar most certainly does mention that fact and I’m sure yours does too. And I’m not likely to forget a paid day off, whether it’s on the calendar or not.
So you can imagine how charmed I was when some people I’m working with who don’t get the day off kindly scheduled a meeting I need to attend on the holiday.
The splash or 12 of vodka I plan to add to my OJ will be the only good part of that particular DC morning. Thanks for the daily reminder of my missed holiday, Tropicana!
Happy President’s Day. If you have the day off, enjoy! If you don’t, grab a mini bottle of Tropicana on your way into work. Tell ’em Congress sent you!
I guess I’m just clueless because none of those ads you mentioned resonated with my funny bone. What I *did* laugh out loud over was the “splash or 12…” part. Sounds like a plan to me. I have the day off, but more than likely I will be sitting at my laptop (at home) remoting in to work to get stuff out of the way so I don’t encounter too many panicky people that following morning (panicking because they need the data I provide for their morning meetings, etc.). Panicky people at work stress me out, and I’m already stressed enough at work as it is.
I don’t think you’re clueless, I think the ads just aren’t funny!
People who get panicky and want me to be as panicky about their stuff drive me nuts.
I agree with Rebecca in that maybe it’s a DC thing, but I don’t get the ads. I also don’t get the day off, so a “splash or 12” of vodka sounds just about right…right now. At my desk.
I like to say there’s a difference between being clever and being funny. Sometimes something can be both, but often it’s one or the other. In the case of these ads, they are neither!
I absolutely do not get the ad at all.
Hm.
What’s supposed to be funny about it?
Also: What’s not funny? YOU WORKING ON MONDAY. Who’s ass do you need me to whoop for you?
Well, it’s not funny! But I believe the idea is that there are several not very mainstream government holidays that one might forget. And if you forgot and commuted to work only to find you didn’t need to, that would be a bad morning, for which you’d need a nice cold Tropicana to recover. Or something.
There’s nothing funny about that, especially when you (me!) have to work one of those holidays. Grrr! And I really can’t identify with forgetting a day off.
(I’ll send the contact info for the ass whooping separately, thanks!)
I definitely don’t get the ad. The act of Congress I get, but it’s not funny. Come on, Tropicana…you can do better than that. Oh, and I don’t get tomorrow off, so I’m definitely going to take your Vodka tip. Cheers, Monday!
I’m so glad people are with me RE: these ads not being funny.
I managed to make it through Monday without getting drunk. Setting the bar for success pretty low these days.
Stopping by from the Finding the Funny Party! http://queenofsavings.com
Now, that IS annoying! You aren’t supposed to go to work on your day off for a stupid meeting! I’m not even sure Tropicana with vodka would make me in a better mood about that. (Thanks for linking up with us at #findingthefunny!)
I ended up leaving the meeting after a couple hours…but the getting up early is what annoyed me most. I still had the afternoon with my husband to enjoy the holiday. And I managed not to become dependent on alcohol, so yea for me!
