Praise all that is holy, this year’s buckeye making is complete.
Buckeye rolling movie: Crazy Stupid Love (I’d give it maybe 2.5 stars? It was good for what it was, silly entertainment to keep my mind off the monotony of rolling buckeyes.)
Yield: 170 (new record)
Elapsed Time: 2 hours, 40 minutes to roll. Almost 2 hours to dip and put away.
Exciting new complications: The dough was softer this year, I was almost able to mix all three pounds of powdered sugar using the mixer and then a wooden spoon. I threw in a little more sugar but it was still soft. I tried to avoid having non-buckeye-like holes in my finished product (see last picture here) by dipping them without skewering them. I used a dipping tool and it took awhile to master it, if I can say I mastered it at all. Many buckeyes dove into the chocolate like it was a swimming pool and they were on vacation (see sad tiny remaining speck of peanut butter filling on the buckeye second to bottom on the left of the photo). My inability to control the dipping process without a skewer and the softness of the dough yielded some freaky little misshapen buckeyes. I also must’ve got the chocolate too hot, because many buckeyes have annoying large “feet” this year. But they don’t have skewer holes in the filling, by god.
Number eaten: 1 as always. Even though they look a little funky and sad, they taste the same as always. They still taste like effort to me though, so the “making buckeyes as diet plan” concept is still effective.
What? I LOVED Crazy stupid love.. really, I thought it was well written. It made me cry, laugh, dream, think, ponder and really consider everything in my life.. marriage.. etc.. I loved steve C and his”be better than the gap..” scene … and the ending.. unpredictable for sure.. AND I share a birthday (tomorrow) with the red haired women lead 🙂
Hi Reagan! I don’t think I can say I loved it, but I really liked it. The end part made me cry, although that’s not saying much since those coffee commercials at Christmas make me cry too.
I did find some scenes funny, I particularly liked the scene where Steve C was complaining about how many layers he was wearing–I too am befuddled by the fashion these days to wear so many clothes all at once. But I was struck at the movie being more cute than laugh out loud funny sometimes. Still enjoyable though. 2.5 stars for me is pretty good. I’m a tough grader! Some of the unfortunate crush (between the 13yr old boy and the babysitter and the babysitter and Steve C) scenes made me cringe more than laugh too.
Happy (early) birthday!
The last time I made buckeyes I had my three godchildren and one of their friends dip them. Boy did it make that chore easier! lol And, believe it or not, they loved doing it. I put the chocolate in my fondue pot and put in on a table they could all sit around. Only stroke of genius I ever had in my life.
Quick story… my mom went to a Sugar Bowl game in New Orleans to see the OSU Buckeyes play. Everyone they encountered asked what a Buckeye was. She had to explain it was a tree, a nut, and, of course, a candy. Confused everyone! lol
I need to obtain some children for next year!
I love the OSU story–when I see their basketball games on TV, I want to bite into their mascot’s head. Yummy chocolaty/peanut buttery goodness.
I have never heard these called Buckeyes! We dip them all the way and call them peanut butter balls…..snore. These would land squarely on my comfort food list. In fact, I saw the photo and immediately thought–oh, yes. I need these this week! I totally get the “tastes like effort” but I would still pop about a dozen of them into my mouth before my brain could engage and try to reason with me.
That’s it, next year I should just dip them totally and be done with it!
Those look amazing!!!! Where do I send my address so you can ship me some? 😉
Lisa, if I have any left over at the end of the season, I will totally send some to you! I really don’t eat them anymore.
